And now onto the post & Tips....lol:
I am planning on sharing my colouring endeavours, hints, tips, advice and crafty projects. If you have any questions or would like to see a certain area focused on please feel free to let me know :)
So where do I start? Primarily my first love for colouring is my Promarkers, I love the way they lay down so seamlessly and I love the way they blend and mix. There is an amazing range of colours and shades to pick from and this makes playing with colours so much fun :)
Just recently I coloured up some fabulous new stamps for their release and shop packaging and have been asked by numerous people for tutorials on colouring these specific Images and as there is a nice range of textures - hair, fur, skin, clothing etc I thought this would be a great place to start my journey with Letraset.
However, before jumping straight into how I colour, this fortnight I thought I would share my main hints and tips.
Feel free to read/print out the below or if you prefer you can watch this information on this 2 part video HERE - Video part one / Video part two

My Colouring Tips!:
1. ColourChart – I find this essential when colouring with any medium and best if you use a blank one you fill in yourself and print/colour it in on the main paper you will use. Great for seeing pens true colours and seeing at a glance what colours you have and what you think will blend.
2. Paper does matter – The smoother the better, and one that doesn’t absorb ink to quickly.
The card I use for my colouring projects can be found HERE: Marker Card

3. Fine tip nibs are a must for me. Normally I use these on every colour shade I use other than the colour I use for blending (the lightest shade). Unless I’m doing bigger areas, then I will use the bullet nib or the tip of the chisel nib for flicks.
4. I try and use a minimum of 3 colours shades – Dark / Medium / Light. Your 3 shades can be from the same pen (see video)
5. You need to find the best way to shade for you, light to dark or dark to light. I tried both ways and I find dark to light much easier as I can look at what I’m doing and work out where the shadows are and add these first.
6. I colour in sections where the image allows it, as this means you are blending wetter ink.
7. In general, I always do flicks/strokes and always in the direction of the lay of the hair or clothes etc
8. OK so my actual colouring technique is light flicks, I use a flicking motion and I flick away from myself, turning my image as I do this.
I add my darkest shade andI then add the next lightest colour and repeat, going over the colour before but extending it slightly further with each shade. My lightest shade I use all over and blend it all.
At this stage it will all now look a bit muddy and you will be thinking ‘oh no, what have I done’ but carry on, as these are your base shades.

At this stage it will all now look a bit muddy and you will be thinking ‘oh no, what have I done’ but carry on, as these are your base shades.
So then you start again dark, lighter, lighter etc perhaps coming out a bit further this time and flicking the pen into areas where you think there may be a crease or shadow etc I DON’T generally use the lightest colour again, as this will muddy it too much and at this stage I am going for definition.
I do all objects/clothes/hair in the same way (flicks in the direction of lay) – The only difference is for objects/clothes I try and make sure all colours are blended smoothly – BUT for hair I don’t do this, in fact I try and leave some of the flick lines showing, for definition.
I am finding with every image I colour I improve slightly, so practise is definitely the name of the game.
Hope you have found these hints, tips and basics useful and I hope you will enter my fab giveaway.

DeleteHi I'm a newbie to colouring too / so anything is appreciated but would like to know more about blending pencils
ReplyDeleteHi Linda :) All colouring is pretty similar and follows the same sort of basis. The main difference with pencils is you don't need to section in the same way as they are already dry unlike markers, and you can blend with the lightest colour but may find it easier using a blending solution in the same way you would use your lightest shade with a marker. I will try and do some pencil tutorials though too :) hugs xx
