-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week I decided to try my hand at hand colouring a linen bag. I notice that most people tend to paint them for the colour, but I thought i'd try it with my Promarkers and I was pleased with the results. I wasn't sure how much detail or shading i could manage, as of course Linen is very absorbent, despite that i still think the fab Molly from Visible Image came out really well and that I managed to show more detail than i expected. What do you think?

1. First i stamped my images and border in Black Archival ink.

2. As this then soaks into the linen and looks quite faded, I then went around all the black lines with Letrasets beautiful fine Liners, they are so lovely to use. This gave everything a nice dark crisp line.

3. I then coloured all of my images in, I had to colour in a slightly different way, as of course the ability to blend is lost on material that is so absorbent. (Don't forget to put some sheets of paper inside the bag to stop any bleed going through to the back of the bag).

4. I embroidered words in a matching red onto my bag - The words look a bit odd in the photos but I think its because the material is tighter in this area, so it has created an optical illusion of looking funny when photographed.

So remember we all know they can be used on paper and card stock and we all tend to use them to match our ribbons, pearls, flowers etc to our work, but don't be afraid to try them on material bags because you think they will not merge well, as I think they look great on material :)

  5. Love it! And your colouring is amazing as always, which is even more impressive considering it's linen!
    And yes, I blame you for my current "must use fine nibs" obsession... Around half of my markers have them on already! x

  6. Lovely idea. Do you have to seal the ink to stop it running (eg if the bag gets wet in the rain)? :-)

    1. Hi Andrea, The ink shouldn't run when wet as its permanent :) xx

  35. Hiya Samantha,
    Im a new follower and I think your design & colouring on the bag is gorgeous!!! I would never have thought about using my Pro/Flex/Aquamarkers like that... I have 3 blank Christmas stockings that I brought earlier on this year so I will let my teenage daughter loose on one (for herself) and the 2 I shall decorate for my two wonderful grandsons and see what we come up with.
    I shall be back to your own wonderful blog let alone the fabulous Letraset blog and I would love to win some Promarkers and the fine nibs. This is my 2nd comment as I have already posted a comment on the Letraset.
    Many thanks with {{{happy crafting hugs}}}

    1. Many thanks Marg :) Hope the kids have lots of fun :) the only one I may not use, is the Aquamarkers, they won't lay down on the fabric in the same way and may run/wash out if they get wet :) xx

  37. Very interesting idea and great tutorial - I love ProMarkers - they were my first alcohol markers ever. I was afraid to use them on fabric, only colored some white ribbon :D, and now I can try, as I see it works and it looks gorgeous. I left 2nd comment on your Letraset blog post.

  39. Hi :) I would have thought archival brilliance would be fine to use, however it is not an ink I have or have tried. As for line washing, sa long as both the ink was permanent/waterproof like the Promarkers, It should wash up OK. However I have only used them on items that wouldn't need to go through the wash, so can't be certain. I will try and colour something I can wash to test this out :) xx
